2018 events in Filey and beyond (January to June)

This year of 2018 is jam-packed with events of all kinds in Filey, Scarborough, Whitby and nearby, and there’s hardly a day without something happening on the Yorkshire coast. Whether it’s food and drink events you’re after, steampunk or Goth weekends, rally races or family music festivals – Yorkshire will deliver.

As a sneak preview of the fantastic range of events and festivals you could visit while staying in our holiday apartment in The Bay, Filey, here are a few which caught our eye from January to June (watch this space as we’ll soon be adding details of events from July to December 2018).

Big Garden Birdwatch 2018 logoJanuary

Big Garden Birdwatch at Bempton Cliffs, Saturday 27th January. A chance to join tens of thousands of people all over the UK counting and enjoying the huge range of wild birdlife we have. RSPB Bempton is just 15 minutes drive from Clara’s Den, so see what dates we have available in January.

Captain James CookFebruary

Dark Skies Festival is organised by several National Parks, including the North York Moors just a few miles from Clara’s Den, which encompasses many night-time activities such as star-gazing, nocturnal animal watching and even night-time mountain bike rides.

The famous town of Whitby, home of Captain Cook, is just 1 hour north of Clara’s Den – across the scenic countryside of the North York Moors. 2018 is the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific in 1768, so it’s a fantastic time to visit the ‘Whitby in the Time of Cook’ exhibition at the Captain Cook Museum. For somewhere lovely to stay see here for our holiday apartment dates in February.

60163 Tornado locomotiveMarch

The Yorkshire Coast is famed for it’s artistic opportunities, and Scarborough – less than 10 miles from Clara’s Den – has a thriving community of artists. Scarborough Art Society is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, and has an exhibition entitled ‘Memories of Scarborough’ looking at childhood, wartime Scarborough, holidaymakers and much more. We currently have availability in March at Clara’s Den self catering holiday apartment.

March is also a great time to take a trip on the North York Moors Railway, pulled by the legendary 60163 Tornado locomotive. There’s nothing quite like travelling through the spectacular moors on a steam train, and the gorgeous towns of Grosmont and Pickering are well worth a visit. Grosmont is about an hour from Clara’s Den, and the road there is beautiful – especially if you take the scenic route up the A169, which may not sound exciting but winds its way through the maginifent Dalby Forest! Check out the dates we have available in for our one bed holiday flat in March 2018 here.

Sci-fi ScarboroughApril

As Spring starts, why not head 20 minutes from Clara’s Den to the hidden gem of Elizabethan stately home Burton Agnes Hall. If you’re staying on the coast with a little one they’ll love the Easter Egg Hunt of Easter weekend, but if you’re looking for something a little more grown-up then the Hall houses one of the best art collections in the North. Burton Agnes Hall as ‘the perfect English house’, rated alongside Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and Chatsworth House, so is a place not to be missed. See the dates we have available in April here at Clara’s Den.

For something completely different, Sci-Fi Scarborough happens on the weekend of 21st/22nd April 2018. Packed with a fantastic mix of guests, panel talks, retro, tabletop & video gaming, fan film theatre, cosplay competition, geek pub quiz, trading hall, movie prop & model displays, Minecraft Gaming Hub, Saturday night party – and lots more! This will be a sci-fi fan’s idea of heaven, so to stay locally (Scarborough is less than 10 miles away from Clara’s Den) see what dates we have available in our self catering holiday apartment here.

Olivers Mount racingMay

Speed freaks are well catered for in May, with the Festival of Speed Bike & Car Hill Climb at Oliver’s Mount. This weekend includes many races, and there will be a car and bike show throughout the whole weekend with big motor show on Monday 7th May. This is a very popular event, with fans travelling from across the country, so the organisers recommend you book tickets early. Look here for dates when Clara’s Den holiday apartment is available in May.

While Whitby Goth Weekend is known worldwide, a little closer to home Filey Steampunk Festival, on the weekend of May 19th-21st, will also be well worth a visit. You may not be familiar with Steampunk, so all the more reason to visit the festival for their evening extravaganza entitled ‘CABINET OF CURIOSITIES’ featuring live music and entertainment from performers visiting from all over the UK. There will also be street entertainment around the town, and two wondrous trading emporiums to explore. Best of all, Filey is just a couple of miles from Clara’s Den – and it’s a fantastic walk along the beach from The Bay holiday village to Filey town (at low tide, of course!). We’ve still got availability for our holiday apartment in May, but probably not for long!

PuffinFiley will resound with music from some of the best folk artists around at Filey Folk Festival, Friday 4th May – Monday 7th May. Featuring dozens of performers, plus sign-alongs and open mic events, this festival is rightly know as one of the best in the UK. Saturday 5th May is also the day that the Tour de Yorkshire comes through town, so expect this to be a fantastic weekend of music, entertainment and world-class sport. If you’re looking for one bed holiday accommodation in The Bay, Filey, we’ve got availability in May.

Also from May to July don’t miss out on the chance to see wild puffins nesting on Bempton Cliffs, home to RSPB Bempton. It’s just a 15 minute drive from Clara’s Den, and as well as puffins there are up to half a million(!) nesting seabirds on the towering 400ft chalk cliffs, including gannets and guillemots. Bempton is rightly world famous as a bird-watchers paradise, and having it on our doorstep is a fantastic chance to watch, paint or photograph the best of British wildlife.  May is sure to get booked up quickly, so see the dates we have available at Clara’s Den here.

Bridlington old town 1940sJune

June is packed with events, almost too many to list! In particular we’re looking forward to Bridlington Old Town 1940’s Festival, where the old town in Bridlington will echo with the sound of swing and the clumping of army boots! If you’ve never visited Bridlington old town you’re in for a treat, featuring historic buildings and a very impressive church – no wonder it was chosen as the set of Walmington-on-Sea for the 2016 film of Dad’s Army.

If traditional village fairs are more your thing, then Scalby Fair will be just the ticket, being one of the last village fairs in the North of England. Located in the village of Scalby near Scarborough, just 12 miles from Clara’s Den, this week-long fair will feature over 50 stalls, music, dancing, and family attractions. There’ll be wine tasting, a beer festival, and the main fair day on Saturday 23rd June will be packed with entertainment. June is a popular time of year, so book your accommodation in Filey early to avoid disappointment.

RAF Red ArrowsFinally, June 30th is Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated across the country with hundreds of events. Scarborough will have an impressive line-up of free entertainment in support of this day. Just a few of the things happening in and around Scarborough South Bay are:

  • The world-famous Red Arrows RAF display team will be showing up to wow the crowd
  • To celebrate 60 years of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight there will be a Spitfire display
  • And a parachute display from the RAF Falcons Parachute Display team!
  • Scarborough RNLI/HMCG Search & Rescue Helicopter will demonstrate an air to sea rescue
  • Plus exhibitions including WW1 ambulance cycles and a tribute to the WW2 Cockleshell Heroes

And as if that’s not enough there will be stalls, vintage displays including military vehicle, musical entertainment and marching band parades. This will be a day not to be missed, so book now for the weekend of 30th June.
