2018 events in Filey and beyond (July onwards)

This is the second part of our quick look at some of the many varied events happening on the Yorkshire coast in 2018. Look here for the first part, covering January to June. Remember, if you’re looking for a high-quality holiday apartment near Filey then take a look at our available dates.

July

On the 5th to the 8th July the normally sleepy village of Staxton will become the venue for Staxtonbury, a family outdoor festival which the NME has described as “easily North Yorkshire’s most notable musical event”. They celebrate their 10 year anniversary this year, and as usual feature a huge line-up of varied musical acts over five stages, family entertainers, food stalls and bars, plus the famous Yorkshire festival atmosphere. They always sell out, so get your tickets early. And if camping is a little too much hassle, we currently have the weekend of the 6th-9th July available in our contemporary holiday apartment less than 15 minutes drive away (but probably not for long!)

July is also the month that GIMME ABBA (one of the best tributes to ABBA) comes to town. The Evron Centre, right in the middle of Filey, hosts many events throughout the year, but if it’s platforms and flares you’re after then Filey on Friday 20th July is where you want to be! Our holiday apartment is just 3 miles south of Filey and we’ve got dates available.

But the big event to get to in July is the Festival of Filey – Return of the Dragon on 29th and 30th July. This will be a fantastic family experience, completely free to enter. There’ll be a parade with marching band, funfair, classic cars and bikes on display, motorcycle display team, Cossack riding and much more. Plus food and drink, top tribute and local bands – not to mention marauding Vikings fighting! Filey is just 3 miles from Clara’s Den, so our holiday apartment is ideally situated for you to enjoy the fun. You can even walk to town along the beach (dependent on tides, of course!)

August

Everyone living by the coast is well aware of the amazing work done by the RNLI, so it’s fantastic that every year these brave men and women take time out to host a Lifeboat Weekend. This year on the weekend of 10th – 12th August, Staithes and Runswick will be where you can show our support for the RNLI. There will be displays and demonstrations, and we know from experience it’s a fantastic day out – well worth the trip up the coast from Filey.

If you like to see people in cars and on bikes drive up hills very, very fast, then you’ll know about the National Car & Bike Hill Climb at Oliver’s Mount on 19th August. The famous circuit in Scarborough, less than 10 miles from Clara’s Den holiday apartment near Filey, will again be the gorgeous backdrop for races up the 1076 meter course. We have availability for that weekend, so book now.

September

For something a little less noisy, Scarborough Open Golf Week is being held Sunday 2nd to Friday 7th September 2018 at four picturesque clubs along the Yorkshire coast. Filey Golf Club is the nearest to Clara’s Den, just 3 miles away, while Scarborough North Cliff and South Cliff Clubs are both about 10 miles away. The furthest club is Whitby Golf Club, which is a gorgeous 1 hour drive away through the North York Moors. The week features competitions for mens, womens and mixed teams, and there are a wide array of prizes and trophies up for grabs. If you’ve not had the pleasure of playing at one of these lovely clubs, surrounded by the beauty of the Yorkshire coast, then don’t miss out – book your stay at our holiday apartment now!

If music is more your thing, as it is mine, then don’t miss Scarborough Jazz Festival 2018 which is being held on the 28th – 30th September at Scarborough Spa. It’s the 16th festival this year and there’s a fantastic range of performers, from big bands to small groups. I’m particularly impressed to see they’ve booked internationally-known guitarist John Etheridge, alongside British stalwarts like Alan Barnes and David Newton. They currenty have early bird pricing available so book your accommodation now.

October

The North York Moors Railway holds its popular Wartime Weekend on the 12 – 14 October, where as well as travelling on steam and heritage diesel trains there will be a wide range of war-themed entertainment and displays of vehicles at stations all along the railway line. Some of the entertainment on offer will be a replica wartime street, Home Guard demonstrations at Goathland and living history displays at Levisham. Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy the spectacular sights of the North York Moors, situated inland from Clara’s Den and well worth at least one day out. We also have availability throughout October.

November

November has two events at opposing ends of the artistic scale! Firstly from 2nd – 4th November we’ll be putting on our dancing shoes for the Scarborough Northern Soul Weekender. Featuring two rooms of soul, the finest DJs will be playing the beats you love plus hard-to-find tracks from the last few decades. This is always a popular event, and with just 800 tickets on sale it will be an intimate and friendly weekend away for all soul-lovers so make sure you have somewhere nice to stay.

On Friday 23rd November Scarborough Spa hosts the world famous Russia State Ballet as they perform The Nutcracker. This is a rare chance to see one of the greatest ballet companies perform the most famous ballet of them all, setting the mood perfectly for Christmas! Whether you’ve seen The Nutcracker before, or this will be your first taste of ballet, you are sure to be captivated by the enchanting story and awe-inspiring production. To make the weekend truly special book into one of the nicest (in our opionion, at least!) holiday apartments on the Yorkshire coast.

There are bound to be more fantastic events being booked as 2018 progresses, particularly in December, as we’ll be adding details of them to this website to tempt you into visiting the Yorkshire coast. And, of course, you should stay in our beautiful holiday apartment!
