Yorkshire cuisine is known worldwide, and rightly so. From puds to parkin, we have a fantastic history of producing delicious treats. And, of course, on the coast we have the bounty of the North Sea to keep us satisfied – Yorkshire fish and chips are well known to be the best.
So if you’re looking for a place to eat while staying at Clara’s Den holiday apartment in Filey, you won’t be surprised to learn there are many places nearby to get a light bite, or a more extravagant meal.
Just a few minutes walk from our apartment is the John Paul Jones pub/restaurant, which we often use ourselves. It’s busy but friendly, and the food is good – you can see the menu on their website here. I’m particularly fond of their steak and ale pie, and the special s board always contains something tempting.
Of course, a walk on Filey Bay is exactly what you need to work up an appetite, so it’s a good job that just 20 minutes walk from our apartment is Hunmanby Gap Beach Cafe, which boasts stunning views across the bay – plus a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and light meals. They also stock buckets and spades, just in case you forget yours, and it’s possible to purchase a ‘bucket of chips’ which is exactly what it sounds like!
Just three miles north towards Scarborough from The Bay holiday village you find Filey, which has a wealth of quality eateries. Inghams fish and chip restaurant and take-away is very popular, as are the seafood stalls down on Coble Landing. We particularly like Cobble Bar & Bistro which offers great food, and fantastic views across Filey Bay.
We’ve also enjoyed visiting San Marco Ristorante right in the centre of Filey, which offers an authentic taste of Italy. There are several other highy-regarded restaurants in Filey, but we’ve not had chance to try them all (yet!). The next one on our list to visit has to be Amparian Tapas Bar and Restaurant, about which we’ve heard really great things.
A few miles further north Redcliffe Farm Shop and Cafe, which is on the road to Scarborough, is well worth a visit, both for the farm shop – which does a great range of local produce – and it’s stylish cafe. We can highly recommend the cooked breakfast! If farm shops and cafes are your thing you could also head south towards Bridlington for Marton Manor farm shop and tearooms, which is set in converted farm buildings and has a very tempting selection of cakes.
There are two places we can recommend in Scarborough itself. The first is the Blue Crush bar and diner, situated just yards from the surfers paradise of North Bay, and with views across the bay to Scarborough Castle. They do generous cooked breakfasts, and a range of burgers and pizzas, along with fantastic fish and chips. They also have regular live music featuring local musicians.
We can also recommend the Eat Me Cafe, located just behind the world-famous Stephen Joseph Theatre. The cafe offers a diverse multicultural menu, with locally-sourced ingredients – no wonder they won The Good Food Guide Cafe of the Year 2014 award.
Finally, if you want an up-market meal for a special occasion we can highly recommend the Star Inn the Harbour in Whitby. Established in 2017 by Michelin-starred chef (and local lad) Andrew Pern, our visit will long be remembered as one of the best meals we have ever had. Don’t expect it to be cheap, but if you’re looking for something really special this is the place to go.
